HONDURAS TASK FORCE

March 13-21, 2004

PROJECT This Task Force was led by Nathan and Cydil Waggoner and worked with missionaries Larry and Angie Overholt (www.transcrisur.org).   Their ministries are in evangelism, discipleship, healthcare, agriculture, and community development in Choluteca, an area of southern Honduras that was hit especially hard by Hurricane Mitch.
The Asbury team's primary project consisted of constructing a home for Esmilda, a twice widowed woman with several children (see Photo Gallery/Worksite).  Other ministry included providing evening services for the church plants in Choluteca (twice), El Limon, and San Jeronimo (see photos in the Photo Gallery/Church Services).  A portion of the team was responsible to video the ministries of Choluteca for a media presentation that will be used to raise awareness of individuals in the United States.

HONDURAS
...means "out of the depths" so named by Christopher Columbus when he escaped treacherous waters off this country's coast in 1502.  Honduras , with a beautiful 400-mile Caribbean coastline, is generally mountainous but marked by fertile plateaus, river valleys, and coastal plains.  Though the country has some light industry, the main occupation of its people is agriculture.  Honduras has a semi-tropical climate with 80 degrees during the day and 60 degrees at night, though Choluteca (in the south near Nicaragua) is much hotter and drier than the country as a whole.  Spanish is spoken as the official language.

WGM MINISTRY  The educational programs of World Gospel Mission in Honduras are strong with Tegucigalpa Bible Institute, El Sembrador Bible Institute, Virginia Sapp Christian High School , Los Pinares Academy , El Sembrador boys' farm/vocational school and high school, and a Theological Education by Extension program throughout the country.  WGM is also involved with evangelism and church planting through films, systematic visitation, VBS, youth retreats, military visitation, and much more.
