PAPUA NEW GUINEA (PNG).
PNG is
slightly larger than the state of California and is home
to more than 5 million people. There are more than 800
distinct languages, including 715 indigenous languages
spoken in Papua New Guinea. Though English is the
official language for education, business, and
government only about 2% of the population speak it.
The people of PNG are extremely receptive to
Christianity, although local traditional beliefs are
many times confused and integrated into Christian
beliefs.
WGM MINISTRY.
WGM’s work in
Papua New Guinea officially began in 1996, when WGM and
the Churches of Christ in Christian Union became
partners. At that time, WGM took over the administration
of Christian Union Mission, CCCU’s work in PNG. WGM
currently administers both its own missionaries and CCCU
missionaries. WGM’s main ministries in Papua New Guinea
include church planting, evangelism, and discipleship
through the local Christian Union Church. Missionaries
are also involved in leadership training and Theological
Education by Extension.
REQUIREMENTS.
A passport is required to travel to PNG. Passport
applications
are available through your local post office. If you do
not have a passport, apply for one as soon as possible.
A visa is also required and will be obtained for you by WGM. Record of an updated tetanus shot and yellow fever
vaccination are also required. We also recommend you
receive typhoid and hepatitis A vaccinations. You should
also take malaria pills, which can be prescribed by your
doctor to be taken before, during, and after your trip.
PROJECT.
Nathan and Cydil Waggoner will be leading the Task Force
from Asbury to Papua New Guinea. You will be working
with WGM missionaries
Tim and Diane Bennett in Mt. Hagen, Papua New
Guinea.
The Bennett’s are involved in training and preparing
national church leaders to go out and make disciples for
Christ. This team will have the opportunity to be
involved with a work project at the Bible College.
Additionally, the team will help with a variety of
ministry projects at the college and with local high
schools. The team will have the opportunity to share
skits, songs, games, and perhaps host an evening youth
camp.
Each team member will need to come prepared to share
their testimony and to show God’s
love through a willingness to help and serve wherever
needed.
COST.
$3400 ‑includes all food, lodging, travel, insurance,
airport tax and tips from your home
to Papua New Guinea (cost subject to
change until airline tickets are confirmed).
