Day 7 – house visits

When we lie down at night or wake each morning, the realities that surround us vary from person to person, from life to life. To assume that each and every situation is identical to ours, makes us simply blind to the fact that no one individual shares our unique story. In a world of seemingly plenty, it becomes most evident that the life of each and every person is wrought in some way or another with a specific form of darkness when we simply open our eyes to the truth of what is around us. It is only when we tear down the walls of what we think compose an infinite fortress within ourselves that we begin to understand brokenness and what it means when we are called to live in community with one another. Today as we stepped into someone else’s circumstance, someone else’s story, I think it fair to say that we were forever changed. To step beyond the doorway of one’s home is almost like taking a giant leap into their life itself. When we no longer have walls to protect us from the rest of the world, our innermost being tends to reveal itself most truthfully. This I believe we refer to as vulnerability. As we sat in these humble structures, we began to enter into the unique stories of the very people who call these places home. And the most wonderful part of the whole experience is when you realize that despite the struggles they may be facing, the smiles upon their faces along with the hospitality you are receiving are both most definitely real. There is so much to be said and shared about today, but no short list of words here could ever come close to sharing the lessons we have learned. If there is one thing that can be taken away from today, it is the fact that we should all remember that although life may give us a handful of worries and sorrows, with each and every breath comes one more reason to have joy in every circumstance, love at every opportunity, and compassion for every hungry soul.

These blog entries have been such a blessing, such a city on a hill for me, as I am sure they have been for others reading about your time in Albania. The photos themselves speak of beauty and pain and love. With each new entry, I hear the Lord speaking to my own heart, I see what His Love is doing in each of you, and I feel so very “awakened” and so very proud…..the good kind of proud. Godspeed and see you all very soon! jean
